ThirdWave President/CEO, Roy Hernández, Honored at UC Berkeley 2022 Latinx Alumni Gala

UC Berkeley’s Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association (CLAA) hosted a Legacy Weekend from September 30 – October 2. The program consisted of a luncheon with Chancellor Carol T. Christ, campus tours, legacy gala celebration, and the award of $70,000 in scholarships to Latinx students.
The gala honored four UC Berkeley alumnus from the last 50 years who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to supporting Latinx students at UC Berkeley. Mr. Hernandez was recognized for decades of supporting Chicanx Latinx students at UC Berkeley. In the last 11 years his work has included establishing CASA Alumni to mentor students; publishing ByDESIGN, an online magazine chronicling the extraordinary achievements of BIPOC students, scholars and design professionals; and establishing the CASA Alumni Scholarships, which has awarded $100,000 in financial support, laptops, and software to low-income students studying at Cal’s College of Environmental Design.
The event was organized by Lupe Gallegos-Diaz ’86, Director of the Chicanx Latinx Student Development office and lecturer in the Chicanx Latinx Program/Ethnic Studies Department at UC Berkeley. CLAA is committed to academic excellence, alumni service, philanthropy, and community outreach It has awarded over $200,000 in scholarships to UC Berkeley Chicanx Latinx students.
“To be recognized with such a group of distinguished educators and activists who have dedicated their lives to making a significant difference, was both humbling and a genuine honor,” noted Hernandez.
